WHY THIS WATCH MATTERS
Some watches were made to look important. This Rockford was engineered to earn the distinction. Its 21-jewel Grade 918 movement was produced for the railroad-grade tradition of dependable timekeeping, and its highly decorated nickel plates preserve the careful workmanship of Rockford, Illinois watchmaking more than a century later. The red five-minute numerals, rich blue steel hands and smooth warm-gold case remain wonderfully direct in their purpose. A timepiece from a city closely connected to The Found Dial's own roots, preserved rather than reinvented. Photographed purely and sold honestly.

OPERATING CONDITION
The owner reports that this Rockford Grade 918 runs well and sets correctly. Its 21-jewel manual-wind movement appears complete in the supplied photographs. No current timegrapher reading, daily rate, positional test, amplitude, beat error or full power-reserve assessment has been recorded. The Grade 918's historical railroad-grade specifications do not guarantee present railroad accuracy or suitability for operational railroad use. Lever-set operation is supported by historical grade records, but has not been independently observed for this watch.

WHAT WAS DONE
This watch received a careful general cleaning. No full movement disassembly, complete overhaul, regulation, ultrasonic wash, lubrication or replacement parts have been documented. No dial repainting, hand refinishing or machine case polishing is claimed. Its visible patina and case markings remain part of the watch.
CONDITION & ORIGINALITY
The white, double-sunk-style enamel dial retains a legible Rockford signature, strong black Arabic numerals and striking red five-minute markings. There are scattered small dark spots, faint perimeter discoloration and a possible fine hairline near the two-to-three o’clock edge; that potential hairline has not been conclusively verified under a loupe. The blued hour, minute and small-seconds hands show minor age-related surface changes. The Fahys 14K gold-filled case displays fine scratches, swirls and isolated dark marks; the smooth exterior back is visibly marked, while the inside carries multiple etched or scratched inscriptions that cannot be read reliably enough to establish service dates. The owner describes the crystal as original, but period/factory originality is unverified. The Rockford-signed dial and movement are consistent with known Grade 918 design conventions; the original assembly of the movement, dial and separately made Fahys case cannot be proved through a factory archive. No specific railroad-owner provenance is known.
THE STORY OF THIS WATCH
The appeal of this Rockford starts on the dial, where early American watch design turns precision into something immediately legible. The large numerals, red five-minute scale and heat-blued hands make a small mechanical instrument feel remarkably direct. Opening the case reveals the other half of the story: a decorated, 21-jewel Grade 918 movement, with a finely patterned finish and specifications engraved into the plate. For The Found Dial, there is an added geographical connection—Rockford, Illinois is also part of our own history. The watch’s personal ownership history remains unknown, but its manufacturing story is written plainly in metal.
REFERENCE & MODEL HISTORY
Historical Rockford records identify the Grade 918 as an 18-size, Model 9, 21-jewel, open-face, lever-set railroad-grade movement adjusted to temperature and five positions. Surviving grade research indicates approximately 2,900 movements made in six batches over about 1900–1908. Serial 707537 suggests this example was made around 1907–1908, rather than establishing an exact production day. Period Rockford catalog material describes nickel-damaskeened plates, a double roller, micrometric regulation and an enamel dial with red five-minute figures. These are historical grade specifications, not proof this individual watch was issued to a railroad, kept its original case or satisfies those settings today. See the Grade 918 historical reference.
ABOUT THE BRAND
The Rockford Watch Company began production in Rockford, Illinois, in the nineteenth century, developing a reputation for substantial American pocket-watch movements and railroad-oriented timing instruments. Built in a city where industrial watchmaking became part of the local identity, these movements are now valued for their workmanship, decoration and ties to the American railroad era. The factory closed in the early twentieth century. Learn more from this Rockford Watch Company history. This maker history should not be confused with provenance of the present watch.

A NOTE ON VINTAGE
This is an antique hand-wound watch over a century old. It has visible cosmetic wear, a partially known service history and no measured present-day timing certification. Running and setting observations describe the reported current condition, not a warranty of modern chronometer accuracy or long-term performance. It has no guaranteed water resistance and should be protected from moisture and impact. Please review the entire photo gallery and ask any questions before purchasing.
